“Optimizing the impact of public policies in favor of research and innovation facilities in the field of medical technologies”

Upper Silesian Accelerator for Commercial Enterprises Ltd. is one of 9 partners operating in the international MedTech4Europe consortium – for the improvement of instruments supporting research and development infrastructure operating in the field of technology for medicine.

Objective

The main objective of the MedTech4Europe project is to update instruments under regional and national policies, given the growing demand for innovative infrastructure in the field of MedTech sector.

Main activities and outputs:

  • State of play of the MedTech sector in each partner’s region;
  • Joint cross-analysis;
  • Self-assessment of regional policies, benchmarking of regional innovation ecosystems, mapping of excellence domains;
  • Study visits and workshops;
  • Local Action Plans.

 Expected results:

  • As a result  of  the exchange of experience between regions and identification of best practices, the partners will be able to implement new solutions to improve their regional policies, in particular:
  • Strengthen the innovation ecosystem for the MedTech sector;
  • Develop business models of RDI infrastructures (Research, Development, and Innovation) giving better access to SME’s;
  • Implement new RDI interregional projects with the identification of complementary excellence domains between regions.

Medical technologies are a key sector for the future in Europe by bringing solutions to reduce healthcare costs in the context of the aging population and one of the key branches of the economy in Europe. Considering demographic changes and an aging population, this sector will require new solutions shortly to reduce health care costs. With the emergence of new and cross-sectoral technologies, it is one of the most innovative technologically advanced sectors that face strong global competition. The only solution and response to changing conditions are innovations in the field of medical technologies. Unfortunately, the med-tech sector is very dispersed, both in terms of products and the enterprises themselves operating in this area. Moreover, the available research and development infrastructure does not always meet the needs and requirements of companies.

With the emergence of new and cross-sectoral technologies, it is one of the most innovative high-tech sectors which faces a strong world competition requiring each time more innovation. In this context, public authorities at regional level need to contribute to strengthening the Research, Development and Innovation ecosystem in favor of innovative medical technology industry in generating economic growth, creating jobs and providing solutions for patients and healthcare systems in the regions

The MedTech4Europe project is implemented as part of the Interreg Europe Program, in cooperation with clusters, business environment institutions, and regional authorities from 8 European countries – from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Finland, and Poland.

The project is implemented under the Intelligent Development Operational Program 2014-2020, Measure 2.3 Pro-innovative services for enterprises, Sub-measure 2.3.3 Internationalization of the National Key Clusters.

The subject of the Project is the development and implementation of a comprehensive set of tools that will contribute to the internationalization of common products of the Cluster and its members.

As part of the project, it is planned to develop and make available a training and consulting platform (COIN) supporting the competences of companies in the field of export development to selected markets, taking into account the specificity of the medical industry, in particular medical products and devices and ICT solutions. The platform containing the developed materials related to internationalization will be constantly enriched by its members who have or will gain experience in the field of internationalization during the project. A comprehensive report will be prepared to summarize the principles of implementing the export strategy of companies from the so-called guide. This guide will be a summary of the experiences gathered based on the case study analysis and the experiences of team members resulting from working on the implementation of the internationalization strategy (participation in events, legal requirements, market specificity, etc.). A permanent product of the Cluster will be an internationalization strategy and a joint marketing plan in the field of activities in prospective markets.

As part of supporting the internationalization of the Cluster products, trips to fairs of the broadest international scope will be organized, selected based on an analysis of the available possibilities of promoting medical solutions in the world and the individual needs of the project participants. Economic missions will be organized to acquire knowledge about new technologies and solutions in the field of medicine and to establish direct contacts. Project participants will have the opportunity to participate in the most important industry events. The implementation of the activities will enable or accelerate the introduction of the Cluster members’ and Cluster’s offers under the MadeInMedSilesia brand to selected foreign markets, with particular emphasis on technologically advanced products.

The main objectives:

  • comprehensive support for 11 members of the MedSilesia Cluster in the expansion of their products and services on foreign markets
  • improving the competitiveness of Polish medical devices and technologies for medicine
  • internationalization of the joint offer of the MadeInMedSilesia cluster and the technologically sustainable products of the Project participants

S3MartMed – European Strategic Cluster Partnership for investments in smart specializations in the technological area.

A new initiative co-financed under the European Union program – COSME, ESPC for investments in smart specializations.

The project will be implemented in the period from 1 October 2018 to 1 October 2020.

  Project partners, 5 clusters:

From 2017. 24 regions have joined the S3 Industrial Modernization Platform group dealing with medical technologies. As part of the platform’s activities, regional authorities, clusters, and organizations involved in issues related to regional policy and regional development met regularly to exchange experiences, identify cooperation opportunities and joint initiatives that could be supported under regional S3 strategies. Today, the platform helps the ReConfirm consortium to identify future flagship investment projects at the European level.

5 partner clusters, which are part of the S3 platform, have decided to create a new European Strategic Partnership to contribute to the creation of links and closer interregional cooperation, in particular to the intensification of activities undertaken jointly by research and development units and entrepreneurs (SMEs) in terms of future investments and transfer of medical technologies.

Objective

The main objective of the S3martMed project is therefore to support interregional and intersectoral cooperation in the field of medical technologies – between European clusters and their members from the SME sector. This is to be achieved primarily by the established cluster partnership, webinars on legal regulations in the med-tech area, matchmaking platform, brokerage meetings, consultancy on financing joint research projects, and creating recommendations for regional policies based on developed cooperation models. All activities within the network will be open activities, open to all regions, clusters, and SMEs involved in the S3Medtech platform.
